Tips for Recovering From a Mastectomy

A mastectomy is a life-altering experience for any woman. Once released from the hospital and at home, patients tire easily, diets change, physical pain is often experienced and depression often plays an accompanying role in the recovery process. The following tips are to let every woman know she is not alone.

Depression is very common

A diagnosis of breast cancer, with or without a mastectomy, can make even the most optimistic of people at least a little depressed. It can interfere with decision-making that is crucial at this moment in a patient's life and make recovery from surgery very difficult. Chemotherapy, radiation and the fatigue associated with these treatments, along with the surgery, can mask depression symptoms from that of a normal surgical recovery.

Pain and side effects

In a routine mastectomy with no complications, patients often return to normal activity within six to eight weeks. This may take longer if additional treatments are required, which can add to fatigue. Side effects include swelling, soreness, bruising and tightness in the breast area, in the arm and the shoulder. Patients are to expect permanent scarring that usually fades over time and tingling or numbness in the upper arm(s) is not uncommon.

Expect recovering from a mastectomy to take up to 2 months, longer if added treatments are required. A balanced diet and adding in exercise, under a physician's supervision, can help to increase recovery time and alleviate depression. It is recommended that all women undergoing a mastectomy enter a support group for help with dealing with the emotions and depression associated with a mastectomy.
