How to Make a Mastectomy Bra Out of a Regular Bra

For those who have undergone a mastectomy, finding the right mastectomy bra is potentially challenging and expensive. It is possible, however, to construct a mastectomy bra using a regular bra, a small piece of fabric and basic sewing tools.
First: Selecting the right materials
The first step is to select a regular bra. It is important to try the bra on with the prosthetic breast in order to ensure that it fits properly and comfortably when finished. Some advise that a large gusset, which is the piece of fabric connecting each of the cups, is best for this type of construction. Other necessary materials include a piece of fabric that is at least 1 square foot in size and sewing tools.
Second: Cutting the fabric
The next step involves cutting the square of fabric so that it is barely larger than the cup that is going to hold the prosthetic breast.
Third: Sewing the fabric and the bra
Using either hand sewing tools or a sewing machine, the fabric is sewn into the bra starting by sewing from the outside of the bra. This is best accomplished by sewing from the strap to the center of the bra along its edge. Then, from the center of the bra, the sewing should continue along the bottom edge and back to the strap before ending at the band.
Fourth: Finishing up
The last step is to remove any excess fabric along the edge of the bra. Also, while cutting the excess fabric, a small flap should remain at the opening for the insertion of the prosthetic breast.
